MUORE UN PAPA SE NE FA UN ALTO

2015

Collaboration with Katharina Zink & Mira Sattelberger

The audiovisual installation was a result of a journey to Rome, past the Benedictine Convent of St. John in Switzerland. The exhibition was commissioned for the 60th anniversary of the second Vatican Council.

The footage of the journey is a continuous cycle of distortions between fictional situations and documented material. The images stand as parables of the experiences and reflections made on the journey and demonstrate an ongoing state of suspense, whether or not one will arrive.

The idea of an aesthetic of the sublime is reflected on as a catalyst for spirituality (for the staged protagonists) and search (for the traveling artists); as Charles Taylor puts it “The sublime is an aesthetic category outside of the self.”

Muore un papa se ne fa un altro is an italian saying and means nobody is irreplaceable.
